Would You Want To Win An Ig Nobel Prize?
We all know that it feels amazing to win a glass award; it’s a sense of pride and accomplishment that can’t be beaten. You quickly want to tell the world of your glass award and for everyone to celebrate your success and achievements with you – but maybe you wouldn’t if you were the award winner of an Ig Nobel Prize?
The Ig Nobel Prize is an award of the Nobel Parody for the Dumbest Scientific Achievements – now do you see why this may be a glass award or trophy you probably don’t want to win? Each year, in the first half of October there are 10 achievements (?) that are awarded for the following award winning description #first make people laugh, and then make them think”.
These awards are organised by the team that run the scientific and humorous magazine known as Annals of Improbable Research (AIR). In the awards ceremony, which takes place at Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre, the 10 awardees have the chance to explain their achievements to the public. However, someone known as Miss Sweety Poo will repeatedly cry out “Please Step! I’m Bored” in a high pitched voice / squeal if the explanation of the achievement becomes long winded or boring.
As much as you may feel this is not a glass award you would want to win or even want people to know that you have won, there are some winners of the glass award that are very proud of themselves such as Brian Witcombe from Gloucester who did research on a medicine project. He was looking at “Sword Swallowing and Its Side Effects”, when it comes to his results they included that is resulted in “sore throats” as a side effect.
Then there are Juan Manuel Toro, Josp B Tabalon and Nuria Sebastian-Galles who were studying linguistics at the University of Barcelona. They found that rats sometimes cannot tell the difference between a person speaking Japanese backwards when compared to a person speaking Dutch backwards.
As much as there is a real sense of achievement when you win a glass award, how great would you feel if you won one of the above awards?
